SP20 - Race Cancellation 2020

After the official announcement, of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports - General Secretariat of Sports, (https://gss.gov.gr/grafeio-tupou/deltia-tupou/3087-2020-09-01-14-24-38) dated on 01/09/2020, referring to the organization of Sports events outside the stadium, the Board of Directors, of the International SPARTATHLON Association, with great sadness has to inform that, despite the best efforts during the trying times of COVID-19, has to announce that the SPARTATHLON 2020 Race is cancelled.

The Board of Directors looks forward to the realization of SPARTATHLON 2021, with optimism, and wishes much better conditions to all that deal and participate in any way with Long Distance Races.

ΣΠ20 - Ακύρωση Αγώνα 2020

Σε συνέχεια της από 01/09/2020 ανακοίνωσης του Υπουργείου Πολιτισμού κα Αθλητισμού – Γενική Γραμματεία Αθλητισμού, (https://gss.gov.gr/grafeio-tupou/deltia-tupou/3087-2020-09-01-14-24-38) που ορίζει τις προϋποθέσεις διεξαγωγής Αθλητικών διοργανώσεων εκτός σταδίου, το Διοικητικό Συμβούλιο του Διεθνούς Συνδέσμου ΣΠΑΡΤΑΘΛΟΝ με μεγάλη απογοήτευση γνωστοποιεί ότι παρόλες τις προσπάθειες που κατέβαλε σε όλη αυτήν την περίοδο του COVID-19 αναγκάζεται να προβεί στην ματαίωση του «ΣΠΑΡΤΑΘΛΟΝ 2020».

Το Διοικητικό Συμβούλιο προσβλέπει με αισιοδοξία στην πραγματοποίηση τον Αγώνα του 2021 και εύχεται καλύτερες συνθήκες αγώνων σε όλους όσοι ασχολούνται με οποιονδήποτε τρόπο με τις Υπεραπόστασεις.

Described as the world's most grueling race, the Spartathlon runs over rough tracks and muddy paths (often it rains during the race), crosses vineyards and olive groves, climbs steep hillsides and, most challenging of all, takes the runners on the 1,200 meter ascent and descent of Mount Parthenio in the dead of night.
This is the mountain, covered with rocks and bushes, on which it is said Pheidippides met the god Pan.

Spartathlon is the event that brings this deed to attention today by drawing a legend out of the depths of history. The idea for its creation is belongs to John Foden, a British RAF Wing Commander. As a lover of Greece and student of ancient Greek history, Foden stopped his reading of Herodotus' narration regarding Pheidippides, puzzled and wondering if a modern man could cover the distance from Athens to Sparta, i.e. 250 kms, within 36 hours.
