Press Release 21-09-2017

by Spartathlon / Wednesday, 20 September 2017 / Published in Press Release

7 Days to Launch the History of “35th Spartathlon 2017”

The time counts backwards for the 35th International Spartathon race, which will take place on 29 and 30 September, on the 246 km Athens-Sparta route with many athletes participating. 35 years have passed since British RAF Champion John Foden and his friends managed to prove that the Historian Herodotus was right when in his reports he described that a man is indeed able to cover 250 km in two days.

This year’s “35th SPARTATHLON” anniversary will be launched by 400 world-class athletes from 50 countries and from the 5 continents of the world. Both the increased number of entries and the high level of athletes raise the bar for the organizers of the race. For this reason, the preparations for this year’s 35th SPARTATHLON celebration have begun for months.

The preparations for the coordination and organization of the struggle in recent months, where the President of the International Spartathlon Association and the members of the Board of Directors with their thirty-five years of experience in the event, appointed experienced experts at all points of control of the race in order to make every effort to do it without interruption.

Many well known athletes are taking part in the race, such as Marco Bonfiglio, the Portuguese Joao Oliveira, the ambitious and fighter Czech racer Brunner Radek, and the incredibly dynamic Hungarian Lubics Szilvia who wishes nothing more than the first in the race, due to the absence of the American racer Katalyn Nagy. Among them will be several Greek athletes such as Nikos Sideridis, who in the 34th Spartathlon finished in the first place. Georgia Mitsiou, the Greek runner who impressed last year with her performance, will also seek a better time this year.

The 35th SPARTATHLON anniversary revives a feat of 2500 years, whose current runners run “on the steps of Pheidippides “.
The race is also under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Tourism this year.

Spartathlon revives the footsteps of Pheidippides, an ancient Athenian long distance runner, who in 490 BC, before the battle of Marathon, was sent to Sparta to seek help in the war between the Greeks and the Persians.

Described as the world's most grueling race, the Spartathlon runs over rough tracks and muddy paths, crosses vineyards and olive groves, climbs steep hillsides and, most challenging of all, takes the runners on the 1,200 meter ascent and descent of Mount Parthenio in the dead of night.
