Rune & Mary Larsson – At Spartathlon 2025

Rune & Mary Larsson – At Spartathlon 2025

by Spartathlon / Friday, 05 September 2025 / Published in Press Release

It is with great pleasure and honor that Spartathlon 2025 will welcome two legendary figures of the ultramarathon world: Rune Larsson and his wife Mary Larsson.
Rune Larsson, three-time Spartathlon winner (1987, 1988, 1993), and Mary Larsson, five-time winner in women (1984, 1985, 1986, 1989, 1998), have left an indelible mark on the history of the race. Their remarkable achievements, combined with perseverance, endurance, and dedication, continue to inspire athletes across the globe.
Their presence in Greece this September is not only a return to familiar ground but also a valuable opportunity for younger athletes to listen, learn, and be inspired by the experiences of two true legends of Spartathlon.
Spartathlon 2025 warmly welcomes Rune and Mary Larsson, honoring their legacy and looking forward to their insights and advice for the new generation of runners.

Spartathlon revives the footsteps of Pheidippides, an ancient Athenian long distance runner, who in 490 BC, before the battle of Marathon, was sent to Sparta to seek help in the war between the Greeks and the Persians.

Described as the world's most grueling race, the Spartathlon runs over rough tracks and muddy paths, crosses vineyards and olive groves, climbs steep hillsides and, most challenging of all, takes the runners on the 1,200 meter ascent and descent of Mount Parthenio in the dead of night.
