The SPARTATHLON Under the Auspices of the Hellenic Olympic Committee – A Beacon of Olympic Ideals

With great emotion and pride, the SPARTATHLON announces that it will be held under the auspices of the Hellenic Olympic Committee for 2025. This prestigious recognition marks a milestone in the history of the event and highlights the timeless connection between the race and the values of Olympism.

The SPARTATHLON race, inspired by the heroic journey of the messenger Pheidippides in 490 BC, fundamentally represents Olympic ideals: surpassing human limits, noble competition, and the uniting of nations and cultures through sport. The honorary patronage of the Hellenic Olympic Committee affirms the significance of the race as a global celebration embodying peace, friendship, and solidarity.

The collaboration with the Hellenic Olympic Committee further enhances the uniqueness of the SPARTATHLON and lays the groundwork for strengthening its international appeal. SPARTATHLON is not merely an ultramarathon; it is a symbol of courage, faith in human potential, and the relentless pursuit of the impossible.

As an organization, we are committed to promoting Olympic ideals, showcasing the importance of sport as a bridge that unites people and cultures. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Hellenic Olympic Committee for their trust and support.

Together, we continue to inspire and unite the world through the greatness of sport.

The President
Evangelos Polymeris

Spartathlon revives the footsteps of Pheidippides, an ancient Athenian long distance runner, who in 490 BC, before the battle of Marathon, was sent to Sparta to seek help in the war between the Greeks and the Persians.

Described as the world's most grueling race, the Spartathlon runs over rough tracks and muddy paths, crosses vineyards and olive groves, climbs steep hillsides and, most challenging of all, takes the runners on the 1,200 meter ascent and descent of Mount Parthenio in the dead of night.
