Tuesday, 01 September 2026 / Published in Press Release

Dean Karnazes Global SPARTATHLON Ambassador

With great pleasure and honor, the International SPARTATHLON Association welcomes Dean Karnazes as a SPARTATHLON Ambassador.

One of the most recognized figures in the global ultrarunning community is now even more closely connected with SPARTATHLON, a race that brings together history, endurance, perseverance and the pursuit of human limits.

Dean’s Greek heritage and his deep appreciation of the historical significance of the race make this collaboration even more meaningful. As he himself said, serving as a global ambassador for SPARTATHLON is a role that “stirs my soul.”

As a SPARTATHLON Ambassador, Dean Karnazes will help share the values, spirit and unique legacy of the race with the international ultrarunning community.

Dean, welcome to the SPARTATHLON family.

Spartathlon revives the footsteps of Pheidippides, an ancient Athenian long distance runner, who in 490 BC, before the battle of Marathon, was sent to Sparta to seek help in the war between the Greeks and the Persians.

Described as the world's most grueling race, the Spartathlon runs over rough tracks and muddy paths, crosses vineyards and olive groves, climbs steep hillsides and, most challenging of all, takes the runners on the 1,200 meter ascent and descent of Mount Parthenio in the dead of night.
